“Alice”* and her partner had been trying for a baby for over a year, but were struggling to conceive. Alice’s GP suggested that weight may be a contributing to their struggles, and advised that if they were to need any fertility treatment in the future, she would need to have a BMI of 30 or under. This would mean that Alice would need to lose a fair bit of weight, so when the doctor offered her a place on BeeZee Bodies for some weight management support – she jumped at the chance.
As a nurse working long 12 hour shifts, Alice’s eating habits were a little out of whack. She’d be too busy to eat for long periods of time, but then eat large portion sizes of high fat and sugar foods on the go, or when she got home.
Rather than being given a strict diet plan to follow, at BeeZee Bodies our approach to weight management is different. Alice was encouraged to look at the behaviour patterns that were standing in her way of making healthy choices. She said:
“I found looking at my eating habits really useful. We wrote out a timeline of our day, and for the first time I realised that I would tend to do most of my eating in the evenings which was then something I could try to adjust. It was also interesting to look at portion sizes which is something I’ve really struggled with in the past..”
Armed with this better understanding of her eating habits, Alice was then able make her own decisions about how, and what, she could change to improve her diet – changes that would fit in with her own routine. So now, she prepares her food in advance, and is mindful to try and eat regular meals throughout the day to avoid getting hungry and making unhealthy choices when she finishes work.
“I really enjoyed the vibe of the group. We were a really mixed group of different ages and backgrounds and all brought something different to the table. It was such a lovely supportive environment. I was really impressed with how the content was appropriate for all of us as well, it wasn’t patronising in any way.”
As well as understanding her eating habits, Alice enjoyed the physical activity sessions she tried at BeeZee for All – “….even things I thought I wouldn’t enjoy, like Pilates. I certainly felt it the next day!”. Since the programme finished, she started to see a Personal Trainer, and reports feeling better and more motivated to keep up her new eating habits as a result of the increased exercise.
She’s continued to lose weight on her own, and has a lot more energy than she used to. But the biggest result? Alice is now expecting her first child!
