Top tips to beat the heatwave

As the temperature rises, everyday life can become an ordeal. Whether you are out and about or staying indoors, we have some great tips to help you beat the heatwave.

Try the following key steps, to stay cool and stay safe:

Stay in the shade

Try to keep out of direct sunlight, especially between 11am and 3pm. If you are heading out, make sure you wear sunscreen, a sun hat and light-coloured clothing.

Use your windows wisely

Closing your windows, curtains and blinds during the day can really help to keep the hot air out. Then opening your windows again at night will let cooler air in.

Stay hydrated

Be sure to drink plenty of water, or other fluids, so you stay hydrated. And pay attention to the colour of your pee. If it’s too dark, you need to drink more.

Avoid too much caffeine or alcohol and swap hot drinks for cold ones. Frozen water bottles will stay cold much longer than chilled ones.

Stay cool

It is more efficient to cool your body than the whole room, so have a cool shower or put cold water on your skin or clothes. Perhaps drape a cold, wet flannel on your head and neck.

Electric fans can help if the temperature is lower than 35 degrees, and some people like to put ice in front of their fan for a little extra cooling effect.

Iced delights

If you need tea or coffee, consider having an iced version of your chosen beverage, rather than putting the kettle on.

Ice cream can be a cooling treat or choose something a little healthier with a refreshing ice lolly. Frozen fruit also makes a fantastic substitute. Try blending fruit and putting it in lolly moulds – to help your kids beat the heatwave too.

Watch for heat-related illness

If you or somebody else feels ill and has a high temperature, it could be heat exhaustion or heatstroke. If you suspect someone may have heatstroke, seek urgent medical attention.
