Healthy BBQ ideas to try this summer

If you want some healthy BBQ ideas to try this summer, then look no further.

We’ve put together some sizzling suggestions to bring some colour and joy to your grill – and there’s not a sausage, burger or steak in sight!

Magnificent meat

When you picture barbecue food, you will probably imagine red meat. And while cooking sausages and burgers over fire is better for you than frying them in a pan, there are even healthier ways to add protein to your meal.

Here are some top meaty mains to try:

  • Grilled chicken breast
  • Turkey burgers
  • Fish, like salmon or tuna steaks
  • Prawns

They are all delicious in a bun or with a side of salad, wholegrain pasta or brown rice.

Creative carbs

Try cooking up some tasty sweet potatoes. Cut them into skin-on fries, chunky wedges or wrap whole ones in foil and grill them for a quick way to make sweet potato mash.

They are a much healthier alternative to the humble potato – and the mix of smoky and sweet is an absolute must.

Bread can be grilled on the barbecue too. Add a thin layer of low-fat spread, then grill wholegrain buns, flatbreads or some garlic bread for a couple of minutes. It’s a simple way to bring some crunch to your meal.

Versatile veggies

Barbecues aren’t just for meat eaters!

If you are vegan or vegetarian (or just looking for healthy barbecue ideas), smother some vegetables with a splash of seasoning and throw them onto the grill.

Courgettes, peppers and even carrots can make sensational sides or tasty mains.

But the most versatile veggie of all is the cauliflower. Cut it into thick slices and cover them with curry powder, steak seasoning or chilli power for the perfect meat alternative.

Don’t forget dessert!

Finished your dinner but still a little hungry? Then try our barmy barbecue dessert:

  • Wrap a banana in foil (with the peel still on)
  • Place it on the barbecue for a couple of minutes
  • Let it cool a little, then unwrap it and remove the peel
  • Sprinkle with nuts and a drizzle of honey, then serve with low-fat cream.

And for something a little more tropical, grill some pineapple slices and serve with our coconut ice-cream.
